1. Financial growth: Substantial income from Mautic Trials and membership renewals contributed to a healthier financial status, despite being slightly adrift from the budget goals.

2. Community engagement: Renewed support from the Drupal Association and the integration of new corporate memberships showcase the community’s expanding influence and commitment.

3. Product development: Continued enhancements with the release of Mautic 5.2.5 and updates to the community portal, improving user experience and system functionality.

4. New working groups: Onboarding of new maintainers for Docker and WordPress plugins, addressing long-standing maintenance gaps and planning for future upgrades.

5. Global contributions and participation: Notable contributions from organizations and individuals, with an increase in active contributors and community members, driving forward Mautic’s mission and outreach.

Finances

Overall the finances have been much healthier this month, with membership renewals and a large income from the Mautic Trials helping to boost our income. While we’re managing to keep our expenditure lower than budgeted, we’re still around $24k adrift from where we need to be financially.

Income

This month saw us receiving a substantial commission from a large conversion on the Mautic Trials, which results in a 40% revenue share coming back to Mautic. Thank you again to our provider, Dropsolid, for supporting the Mautic Trials infrastructure.

We had a renewal this year from our friends at the Drupal Association – thank you for your ongoing support! – and also a new Community Tier membership was sold – the first corporate membership processed through our new Stripe website integration! – so it won’t land into our account until next month.

We also noticed a duplicate payout from Open Source Collective from our Stripe account due to some internal glitches at their end with operating this new system, which is represented below as income but has been refunded already.

DescriptionAmount
Trials revenue$6,619.50
Corporate members$5,000*
Monthly sponsors$1,105
Individual members$232.26**
One-time sponsors$80
Total$13,036.76

* We sold a Community Tier membership this month too (🎉), but it won’t be transferred into our account until May as it was processed via Stripe, so it’s not represented here and will be reported next month.

** This includes an accidentally duplicated payout from Open Collective’s Stripe account of $66.18 which has been refunded in May.

Expenditure

This month saw us renewing our virtual office, which enables us to have a physical location from which to send and receive postal mail. Other expenditure is in line with expectations.

DescriptionAmount
Employment$8,492.30
Host fees$1,302.69
Payment processor fees$528.24
Administration$306.68
Infrastructure$367.27
Total$10,997.18

Usage of Mautic

We’re continuing to see strong growth in Mautic instances being updated since the beginning of the year, driven in part by the release of 5.2 as the Long Term Stable release.

A chart showing the number of Mautic instances by date last updated. There's an increase around 2020 Q1 then a drop, but the drop is reversed from 2023 Q4 onwards where it's rising to a peak in Q1 2025.
Source: Mautic updates server

Trial signups are also continuing to perform well, with a higher number of signups and larger sized use cases being recorded since the new website was launched. This benefits Mautic because we receive a 40% commission on the trials that convert into using our managed hosting service, helping Mautic to continue to grow and thrive.

Packagist installations with Composer are now seeing an uptick in installations of Mautic 6.0 along with continued installations of Mautic 5.2. There are still small numbers of Mautic 4 installations happening, probably with legacy systems which aren’t yet updated.

The trend is very definitely on the increase, which is great to see with our drive to implement a Composer-by-default install approach.

Community health

This month we’ve released Mautic 5.2.5 with 12 bug fixes, thanks to everyone who contributed to this release!

We’ve also had an update to our Community Portal which sees a much more accessible theme, and a nicer layout, as well as many bugs being fixed, the ability to set your own user timezone in your profile, and an improved anti-spam system. If you spot any problems please report them via our GitHub repository.

Our call for Docker and WordPress maintainers has been answered and I’m delighted to share that we’re in the process of onboarding new working groups for both. This is really important because both Docker and the WordPress plugin had been largely unmaintained for quite some time, so I’m really excited that they’re now going to be updated much more frequently with new features and improvements planned for both.

Check out the Docker roadmap here, and the WordPress plugin roadmap here. If you’d like to join either, please let us know via the Slack channel #docker or #wordpress-plugin.

Conclusion

April has been a promising month for Mautic, with significant financial improvements and deepening community involvement. Although there’s still a gap to be closed with the finances we’ve had a considerable boost from the Trials revenue and membership renewals which is great to see.

There have been some key improvements in areas like the Community Portal and with two new working groups spinning up for Docker and the WordPress Plugin, we’re seeing a much more proactive approach from contributors stepping up to get involved.

We still have a way to go but we’re making good progress and I’m excited to see how next month pans out!

We have some important updates to share with you regarding changes in our leadership team. The growth and success of Mautic is built on the dedication and passion of our community members, and it’s always a bittersweet moment when we bid farewell to our team leads and welcome new ones into the fold.

Product Team leadership change

Photo of Mattias Michaux

Firstly, we would like to announce that Mattias Michaux from Dropsolid is stepping down as the Product Team Lead. Mattias has played a crucial role in shaping Mautic’s product direction, and his contribution has been invaluable in areas like improving and updating our Docker image and Composer installation, automating our release processes and putting in place the foundations for ensuring that we have a solid release cadence going forward.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mattias for his dedication, hard work, and leadership during his tenure.

Portrait of Joey Keller

We are also excited to announce that Joey Keller, who has been serving as Assistant Team Lead, will be stepping up to fill Mattias’s shoes as the new Product Team Lead.

Joey has been working intensively with Mautic since 2020 and has been involved in the Mautic community for many years. He is currently Assistant Team Lead in the Product Team at Mautic and CTO at Friendly. Joey’s commitment and understanding of Mautic’s product landscape make him an excellent choice for this role. His goal is to create a consistent and logical user experience, eliminate existing inconsistencies and further improve key features such as the email builder.

He is particularly keen to enhance collaboration with companies that program their own developments for Mautic so that these can be made available to the community. As Product Lead, he also plans to establish regular feedback rounds to address the most important concerns of marketers who work with the tool on a daily basis. As before, Joey will also be heavily involved in the Mautic forums. We are confident that he will continue to drive our product’s success and innovation.

Portrait of Rahul Shinde

Rahul Shinde, who had applied for the role of Assistant Team Lead, will be stepping into Joey’s vacated role. Rahul has over 15 years of expertise

in software development and open-source technologies, and he has been actively involved with Mautic for several years, contributing to both the core product and tailored plugins.  Rahul’s enthusiasm and fresh ideas will undoubtedly bring a new perspective to the Product team, and we look forward to seeing his contributions in this new role. Rahul will be focusing more on the engineering side, ensuring that developers are effectively onboarded and that as a product we’re continually moving forward, driving technical excellence and innovation.

Marketing Team leadership change

Oluwatobi Owolabi Photo

In addition, we have changes within our Marketing Team. Oluwatobi Owolabi, who has led the Marketing Team for several years and recently stepped back to Assistant Team Lead when Sven Döring joined as Team Lead, is now stepping down.

Oluwatobi’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping Mautic’s marketing strategy, and his efforts have significantly contributed to our community’s growth.

He’s also been a dedicated meetup and MautiCamp organizer and Track Lead for every Mautic Conference Global event we’ve held to date. We express our deepest gratitude to Oluwatobi for his dedication and outstanding service.

Picture of Mike Van Hemelrijck

Stepping into the role of Assistant Team Lead, we are pleased to announce that Mike Van Hemelrijck will be joining effective immediately having applied for the role through the Community Portal

Both Mike and Sven have shown great passion and commitment to Mautic, and we believe their combined expertise will continue to drive our marketing efforts forward.

Community Team leadership changes

Nico Grienauer Photo

In addition to the changes in the Product and Marketing teams, we also have a transition within our Community Team. Nico Grienauer, who has been instrumental in his role as Assistant Team Lead since 2019, will be stepping back. Nico’s insights, drawn from his experience with the Drupal community, have been invaluable in shaping the Mautic community. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Nico for his dedication and the significant contributions he has made.

Picture of Avinash Dalvi

Stepping into the Assistant Team Lead role for the Community Team, we welcome Avinash Dalvi, who will be taking the reins.

Avinash has been a central figure in organizing the highly successful Mautic Conference India event this year. His deep involvement in open source and tech, coupled with his passion for community building, make him an excellent choice for this role.

We are excited to see how Avinash’s leadership will continue to foster growth and engagement within the Mautic community.

Looking Ahead

These changes reflect the dynamic and evolving nature of our community. We believe that change brings new opportunities for growth and innovation, and we are excited about what the future holds under the leadership of our new team leads.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Mattias, Oluwatobi and Nico for their invaluable contributions and wish them all the best in their future endeavors. At the same time, we extend a warm welcome to Joey, Rahul, Mike and Avinash in their new roles and look forward to their leadership and contributions to the Mautic community.

Thank you all for your continued support and commitment to Mautic. Together, we will continue to grow and strengthen our community.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates and developments from Mautic!

P.S. If you’re considering stepping up to a leadership role, we hold elections each year. We currently have the Community Team Lead position open, and Education Team Assistant Lead. Next July we’ll be opening vacancies for the Assistant Lead in the Education, Marketing and Product Team.

Mautic Open Startup Report #7 – October 2023 https://mautic.org/blog/mautic-open-startup-report-7-october-2023 Thu, 02 Nov 2023 15:37:30 +0000 https://www.mautic.org/mautic-open-startup-report-7-october-2023/ Key points

We are continuing to track a wide range of metrics which you can find on the Open Startup Metrics sheet.

  • While there is a steady trickle of memberships at the independent level and several open discussions with potential corporate members, we are quite far behind our targets for the 2023 year to date.
  • Many large sponsors are scheduled to start their contributions in the new year, and outreach efforts to sign up members are increasing.
  • There is a growth in local events and meetup groups, including two new groups starting this month and our first MautiCamp event in Africa.
  • The Mautic community’s health remains stable with around 30 new contributors being onboarded each month.
  • The launch of the Mautic Community Portal marks a significant milestone and will replace costly services like the meetup.com pro account.

Finances

It’s been a pretty steady month with new members signing up and a gradual switching from monthly sponsorships to annual memberships.

I’m making contact with various companies across the community and also reaching out to businesses who use Mautic, and we’ve got a growing pipeline of members who will be signing up over the next months and into the new financial year, which is promising.

We are, however, around $60,000 behind the targeted financial position that we hoped to be in at the end of the year.

While we do have some large sponsors scheduled up to commence in the new year (which would have meant we would have likely met our target this year if they came in sooner), it would be a much better position for Mautic to reach this target by the end of the year to give us more of a financial cushion once the funding from Acquia ceases in the new year.

I will be putting in more effort to sign up members over the coming months, and working with the marketing team to ensure we are communicating about the importance and benefits of Mautic to our audience. If you’d like to help with this, please drop me a line at ruth.cheesley@mautic.org.

I’ll also be preparing some resources for agencies to approach their clients who rely on Mautic regarding becoming a member themselves, as well as how they might be able to support the community in practical terms by enabling their staff to contribute.

If you’re a company who would like to know more about corporate membership please reach out at outreach@mautic.org and I’d be happy to chat further. If you’re an individual reading this and you’re not yet a member, hop over and join today! Remember that if $100 a year is too much, there is also the option to pro-rate based on where you are registered for tax purposes, check out https://mau.tc/big-mac for the specific rates.

Usage of Mautic

We continue to see consistent download rates through the website and a slight uplift in composer installations this month.

We would like to find an alternative way to track downloads through the website, and we’ll be investigating using Analytics in the coming months. If you’d like to help with that, check out this issue: [TMAR-302] – Jira and get in touch with the Marketing Team in #t-marketing on Slack.

We’re also continuing to see a month-on-month growth in websites that are deployed with Mautic tracking – after the large spike last quarter we are back down to around 2,000 new sites this month, which sets us at over 40,000 active websites with Mautic tracking enabled (as detected by builtwith.com).

I’ve added a few more charts to the spreadsheet which may be of interest – namely one showing all detected installations of Mautic whether or not they are still active, and one which shows when Mautic tracking is being removed from sites.

This is something that we should monitor going forward, to ensure that there are more sites deploying Mautic tracking than removing it.

Community Health

We are seeing a fairly steady growth in terms of new members joining the community and the number of people who are starring the Mautic repository on GitHub is also starting to slowly trend upwards. Around 30 new companies are being identified each quarter within the community which is also a positive trend.

We continue to onboard around 30 new contributors each month, but one area we are not tracking at all is people who are making translations on Transifex. It’s quite tricky to find a way to recognise these individuals so if you would like to help with this please check this issue: [TCOMM-191] – Jira.

Events

This month we also had a wonderful MautiCamp in Africa which I was delighted to be able to attend – the first ever MautiCamp event!

Photo of many attendees at MautiCamp Africa standing at the front of a classroom.

It was great to see the excitement enthusiasm and general interest in Mautic as a product and a community. Thank you for the team in Lagos for all their work in growing the community there!

We also have two new meetup groups which are launching this month coming, in Barcelona, Spain and Douala, Cameroon, and the València group is also getting off the ground again.

Meetup groups are really the beating heart of an open source project so we really want to grow them. If you would like to start a meetup group in your area why not submit a proposal here? It’s a great way to meet other people who are interested in Mautic, to share and learn, and to spread the love of Mautic!

Community portal launch

The major news this month was of course the launch of the Mautic Community Portal which has been many months in the making. You can read a bit more about the portal in our blog post here. This will be our central place for teams, working groups, tiger teams and initiatives to keep the community informed with what they’re working on, not to mention our central place for governance, voting and decision making.

I’m really excited to see the initial takeup after our announcement and I’m looking forward to the elections which are open currently, to form our first community elected Council. If you want to stand you will need to be a member of Mautic, and to submit a nomination before the closing date.

With the new community portal coming into action, we are going to be deprecating our expensive meetup.com pro account. Over the next month we will be communicating with all of the members to encourage them to sign up for the relevant meetup group on the new portal before we formerly shut down the account there.

Conclusion

Over the past month, Mautic’s transition from monthly to annual memberships has seen steady progress, although a shortfall of approximately $60,000 has put us behind the year-end financial target. To bridge this gap, increased community outreach and engagement with companies that use Mautic is ongoing, with a pipeline of prospective members believed to come to fruition in the new financial year.

The community has shown a positive trend of growth for some time, with nearly 30 new companies joining each quarter and a consistent intake of contributors each month. To further accelerate Mautic’s growth, we continue to emphasize fostering local community meet-ups which helps both to spread the word about Mautic and also to provide an avenue for people to get local support.

The successful launch of the Mautic Community Portal is a huge milestone, set to serve as the core hub for collaboration, governance, and decision-making across teams and working groups. I’m excited to see it continue to grow and thrive!

Introducing Mautic’s New Community Portal: Your Hub for Collaboration and Engagement https://mautic.org/blog/introducing-mautics-new-community-portal-your-hub-collaboration-and-engagement Wed, 25 Oct 2023 13:11:50 +0000 https://www.mautic.org/introducing-mautics-new-community-portal-your-hub-collaboration-and-engagement/ We’re incredibly excited to announce the launch of our new Community Portal – a unified platform that aims to bring our entire community closer, fostering enhanced collaboration and engagement! We’ve built the platform using the awesome open source tool Decidim with the support from the lovely folks at Octree.

Join the community portal today!

A central home for our community

Over the last four years, our teams, working groups, meetup groups, initiatives and governance processes have grown.

Contribution has always been the driving force behind our community, but it’s often been difficult to know what is going on, and how to get involved. Today, we take another leap forward in our mission by bringing these amazing entities together in one place, allowing everyone in the community to know what’s going on across the project, and more importantly, to get involved.

Our Community Portal is the central spot to stay up to date with what’s happening in our thriving Mautic community. Be it discussions around new features, exciting projects and meetings from different teams, upcoming meetups, or the latest nomination processes for the council, you’ll find it all here.

Over the coming months we will be sunsetting our costly meetup.com pro account, and moving all our meetups over to the community portal.  This will lift the financial limits we have on creating new meetup groups, which cost us $30 per group per month.  The savings will go towards the infrastructure costs for the Community Portal and also toward a marketing budget for the meetups working group to help promote local in-person events.

How to get involved

Getting involved is easier than ever before. Log into the Community Portal with your Mautic forums credentials or create a new account, and dive right into the vibrant discussions, share your perspectives, contribute to proposals, or simply get to know other members of the community. The portal is designed to ensure every voice is heard, and every idea is valued. Freely participate, share your knowledge, and learn from others in this thriving community.

As an open source product, the code is on GitHub, so if you spot any issues or want to help us with running the platform, check out the Community Portal repository.  It’s built on Ruby.  You can also help by translating the content, please drop us a line in #translations on Slack to get started with that!

Members only features

Kindly remember, while participation is open to all, certain areas of the portal like the General Assembly or the option to nominate proposals for the council will require being a member. This policy helps maintain a structured approach to decision-making and maintaining the integrity of our communal beliefs and values. You can become a member for $100 per year, or a prorated amount based on where you are registered for tax purposes – read more here.

Be a part of Mautic’s future!

The Community Portal is an embodiment of our commitment to the strong and encouraging community that Mautic has always been. Each group, each member, and each discussion shapes our collective journey towards better, innovative solutions. By pooling our strengths in this new platform, we aim to spark creativity, encourage participation, and fuel learning – everything that makes Mautic, truly Mautic.

We strongly believe that this central platform will enhance your engagement with Mautic, ensuring your ideas, perspectives, and contributions are effortlessly recognized and implemented.

So, we invite you to dive right into this new Community Portal, and explore the various conversations, projects, and discussions happening around. Let’s keep the conversation going; let’s continue learning from one another, and let’s keep shaping Mautic into software that makes a difference.

Join us, and be part of this exciting new chapter in our shared Mautic journey!
